I guess I need to learn what the "Detail" and "Contrast" sliders in the noise reduction section do. Seems I have more to learn that guy didn't even use the "Mask" control. With the masking, the bird "pops" more against the background, The feathertips at lower left seem much better defined against the background to me.įurther note: See this example. In this new version I have certainly smoothed away some detail in some areas (though it can be hard, looking at the original, to decide what is real detail, and what is noise), but in some areas, it looks sharper and more detailed than in the 2007 version.

Then I sharpened for detail in the bird, and fiddled with "Detail" and "Mask" (important, this allows you to exempt less-detailed areas from the sharpening, so that the effects of noise reduction are not undermined by sharpening), ending up with Mask at 40. First I turned off sharpening and adjusted the luminance NR to clean up the background, initially setting it to 40. Here's what I was able to do in short order in LR3b2. I've never bothered to learn Noise Ninja, Neat Image, etc., and have pretty much only used the tools available in Adobe Camera Raw. Denoise uses custom information from each image to remove noise and remain the best quality of the original image. Lightroom will find the edges and keep everything neat for you. When you compare Neat Image with Topaz Denoise, Topaz Denoise can recover detail with extreme cases.
Then just paint over the edges that the color has bled onto. Seriously underexposed, the ISO1600 raw file was pushed one stop. Just set your brush to Erase and set Auto Mask to On. Here's a 30D image from one of the first times I had any success at shooting eagles.
Particularly after hearing people rave about LR3b2's NR, I tried it out for the first time.
